Entry Requirements

You must have a valid passport and a visa (or pre-approval for a visa on arrival) to enter Vietnam. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, and you must have at least one blank visa page.

Type of visa:

There are about 20 different types of Vietnamese visas including DL, DN, NG, LV, DH, HN, PV, TT, VR, SQ ..ect but most populars are :

Tourist visa (C1)

Vietnam tourist visa is often used for tourism activities but the travelers can apply for it to join family or conduct business in Vietnam for no more than 1 month without having to prove the real purpose of the trip. Requirements for the tourist visa are relatively simple. Embassies usually require a passport with at least 6 months of validity, a completed application form, and one recent passport-sized photo.
US citizen can get a visa for Vietnam 1 year multiple entries but each stay is no longer than 90 days.

Business visa (B3)

In principle, a Vietnam business visa is issued to businessmen entering Vietnam to do business such as making sales, signing a contract or attending a conference. In reality, anybody can ask for a business visa to visit Vietnam for 3 months. The requirements for the business visa are identical to those for the tourist visa, with an additional approval letter provided by your sponsor in Vietnam. If you do not have a sponsor, please contact the Vietnam Embassy for further help. Or, you can also apply electronically from a private travel company. This option is much easier, faster and cheaper.

Unfortunately, business visa is not sufficient for you to work in Vietnam on a long-term basis. If you want to live and work in Vietnam for more than 3 month, a work visa will be required.

Work visa

Obtaining work visa from outside Vietnam is somewhat involved and requires lots of paperwork. Many ex-pats in Vietnam apply for tourist or business visa and then switch to work visa from within the country.

To qualify for the work visa for Vietnam, you must be at least 18 years old, physically fit to do the work, provide proof of technical skills and work permit. Especially, you cannot have a criminal record in the past. The visa validity will be determined according to your validity of the work permit. Those who are holding a work permit valid for at least 1 year can be granted a Temporary Resident Card, which allowing visa-free access during 1 to 5 years.

Transit visa

Vietnam Government doesn’t require a transit visa if travelers transiting through Vietnam just stay inside the airport and do not cross the Immigration Area. For individuals who want to take a short city tour while waiting for the next flight, you’ll have to apply for a tourist visa because Vietnam transit visa is only given to escorted group tours guaranteed by travel companies. The maximum validity of the visa for transiting is 5 days.

Vietnam single entry visa

Vietnam single entry visa allows you enter/ exit Vietnam 1 time or it is also called visa with single use. Once your single entry visa used, you can not entering again Vietnam with this used visa. You must apply for the new one if you want to come back Vietnam again. For example, with 1 month single entry visa, you can enter Vietnam stay for less than 30days. You can not re-enter Vietnam if you exit Vietnam after 10days staying, even your visa valid for 30days.

Vietnam multiple entry visa

Vietnam multiple entry visa allows you enter / exit Vietnam unlimited times as long as your visa still valid. Your multiple entries visa must be picked at the airport when you arrive. After getting your multiple entries visa at the airport, you can exit & re-entering Vietnam at any port s you want.

How to apply a visa for Vietnam from US

You may obtain a Vietnamese visa in three ways:

(1) in advance from a Vietnamese consulate or Embassy;
At a Vietnam Embassy, the visa procedure will take around five days to process. Visa fees will depend on the type of visa for which you are applying. Travelers can get the visa processed at any Vietnam Embassy in any country in order to enter Vietnam for tourism, business, or to visit relatives.

(2) a Vietnamese single-entry e-visa at the website of Vietnam Immigration Department
Vietnamese visa is a kind of travel documents granted by Vietnamese competent authorities, providing permission to travel to and enter Vietnam.

An electronic visa (E-visa) is one of visa types issued to foreigners by Vietnamese Immigration Department via electronic system. Vietnam E-visa is valid for maximum of 30 days, single entry.

Outside Vietnam foreigners who want to enter Vietnam can personally apply for E-visa or through the inviting/guaranteeing agencies and organizations.

E-visa fee is paid via electronic payment gateway as prescribed by the Immigration Department. The fee will not be refunded if the application is refused.

(3) or you may obtain a written approval letter for a visa upon arrival.
Vietnam visa on arrival (also known as Vietnam landing visa, or Vietnam airport visa) is a convenient alternative way to obtain valid permission to visit Vietnam. It can be picked up at one of Vietnam international airports upon arrival.

To obtain the visa on arrival for Vietnam, you need to get a visa approval letter in advance. First, you fill out the online application form. Second, you show it at Vietnam airports to get visa stamped onto your passports. No passport sendoff, no document is required to apply for this type of visa for Vietnam.

Apply a Visa For Vietnam from US

Copies of your Approval Letter will also be forwarded on your behalf to Vietnam Immigration checkpoints at each of Vietnam’s three international airports in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang (online visa approval only applies to air travelers who arrive at one of Vietnam’s international airports; travelers arriving by land or sea must apply for a visa through a Vietnam Embassy).

When you arrive in Vietnam, the Immigration officers will have your documents ready and will be able to issue you your entry visa quickly.
